I'm Emma Bishton. I’m delighted and honoured to have been selected as the Labour parliamentary candidate for South Suffolk.
I've lived here – in Nayland – since 1999 with my husband and two children. I worked for 23 years in the NHS and currently do independent project work for the public and voluntary sectors. I also work as a musician.
I've been a school governor, and I campaign locally and nationally on education issues. I was involved in the campaign to stop cuts to Suffolk's library service in 2011, and I'm currently chair of the Friends of Great Cornard Library.
I voted Remain. Along with education and health, my other main campaign interest is climate change.
I hope we'll have chance to meet over the coming weeks, especially as I'm conscious that the timescale of this snap election means that members had no part in selecting candidates. The CLP are holding a ‘Meet the Candidate’ event on 27th May in Hadleigh, and I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible then.
In 2015, with Jane Basham as candidate, we came a strong second to the Tories, putting the UKIP and the Liberal Democrats into third and fourth. I aim to do at least the same again.
We have little time and few resources, so have decided to focus on our efforts on press and media, social media, hustings, visits and street stalls. We aim for maximum visibility through posters, placards and window stickers. If you can help with this, please get in touch asap.
If you can take a more active role, please consider helping in Ipswich where we have a serious chance of taking the seat for Labour. More information on canvass dates in Ipswich to follow.
If you want a visit from me in the next four weeks, let me know. Priority will be given to events with good media/photo opportunities, particularly with schools and charities.
Meanwhile do keep an eye on the South Suffolk Labour Party website southsuffolklabour.org.uk for details of visits and events.
