This land of broken dreams (a grandfather's lament)

It dismays and saddens me that our children and grandchildren may not have the same chances, and the same hope, as we enjoyed. The widening gap between rich and poor in our society, the struggles of the working poor on low wages, the obscene extent of child poverty in our wealthy land, the cuts in school funding, the shortage of affordable housing and the heavy burden of tuition fees affecting our young people, not to mention the strains on the NHS and in the care provision for the elderly and the mentally ill: it is clear that some adjustments are badly needed if we are to create once again a fairer, more decent, more just, more caring society for the next generations………

Welcome to this land of broken dreams

Welcome to this land of broken dreams,

Where some go hungry just as others feast,

Unless, to feed themselves, they ditch their pride,

And queue at foodbanks for some meagre fare.

Welcome to this land of broken dreams,

Where some pay rents exorbitant for holes,

Small rooms and tiny flats with peeling walls,

Drearily dark and cold with clinging damp.

Welcome to this land of broken dreams,

Where some are homeless, desperate and numb,

They walk the streets unwanted and forlorn,

Search out some dismal doorway for their bed.

Welcome to this land of broken dreams,

Where many work for just a meagre wage,

Where deprivation takes the place of hope,

And hardship blights the children of the poor.

Welcome to this land of broken dreams,

Where cuts and closures take away the beds

In hospitals, and patients lie in pain

In corridors, until a space is found.

Welcome to this land of broken dreams,

Where care for those grown old has almost gone,

The elderly are left to die alone,

The dignity of age is now despair.

Where is the hope, the pride, that we once felt,

The dawn that broke when victory was won,

The promise and the progress seen back then?

Welcome to this land of broken dreams!
